Senior Audit Accountant

Summary of Responsibilities:

Senior Accountants perform most work assigned with a minimum of assistance including job planning, fieldwork, and completion. They often lead one or more assistants, instruct them in work to be performed, review the work done, and direct necessary revisions. Seniors are required to make decisions on all but the most unusual accounting and auditing matters.

Seniors begin to specialize in one or two of the industry niches which the firm serves, while further developing their technical skills and specialized industry knowledge.

Essential Functions:

Performs audit or review procedures as assigned by supervisors, as further described below:

The senior in-charge is an experienced accountant who is responsible for overseeing and performing the audit.

1. The senior in-charge's main responsibility in terms of the audit process is to bring to the manager a completed file with draft financial statements, a draft letter of representation, a draft communication of reportable internal control conditions, a management letter, and a summary of matters for partner attention.

2. Supporting this main objective are other key responsibilities which include:

a. Preparing the audit plan with the assistance of the manager and/or partner and determining the level and extent of necessary procedures in accordance with Firm policies and recording them on audit programs;

b. Ensuring the audit program is carried out and that the evidence obtained is sufficient to meet the audit objectives;

c. Without foregoing overall responsibility, delegating tasks to suitable levels of staff depending on their experience, technical expertise, and required level of competence, allowing for the fact that effective delegation requires coaching, training, and supervision;

d. Providing a reasonable level of relevant and appropriate on-the-job training to audit assistants;

e. Informing the manager of any necessary departures from the audit programs and their potential impact on the audit, including timetable and audit fee;

f. Informing the manager of the progress of the audit particularly as regards audit issues, the timetable, and the quality and timing of agreed client assistance;

g. Conducting a review of the audit workpapers prior to managerial review to ensure that audit assistants have properly carried out the procedures assigned to them, that the audit programs and conclusions are properly completed, and that the documentation of the audit work conforms to Firm standards for recording audit evidence;

h. Ensuring proper time recording;

i. Conducting timely performance appraisals of audit assistants; and

j. Summarizing and concluding misstatements accumulated during the course of the audit.

Assists in proofing financial statements, tax returns, and other documents. 15%

Performs other accounting, auditing and tax duties as needed in engagements and as assigned by supervisory personnel. 10%

Working Conditions:

Frequent same day travel for work at client’s offices, meetings, and seminars using a personal vehicle.

Frequent out-of-town travel with overnight stay for work at clients, meetings, or seminars using a personal vehicle.

Occasional overtime work required throughout the year. Heavy overtime work required during busier periods; may be in excess of 55 hours per week.

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting.

Two to five (2 to 5) years of experience in public accounting, demonstrating a progression in complexity of auditing and accounting tasks and tax knowledge, specifically the Banking Industry.

Proficiency with computer, spreadsheet software program, and calculator.

Well-rounded knowledge of accounting principles and personal income taxes.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English.

Either hold a current and valid certified public accountant’s license, or be working toward obtaining the license by taking and passing the applicable state CPA exam.
